Fulham’s Schwarzer misses out on Arsenal move

One of the most talked about moves of Britain’s summer transfer window did not got through before the deadline.

Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer was keen to make a dream move to Arsenal and for much of the window it seemed as though he would get the great opportunity but as the deadline came, there was no transfer for the Australian.

Cottagers boss Mark Hughes was well aware Schwarzer was hoping for a move but said in the interests of the club, he could not allow him to leave without finding a quality replacement.

“We talked about Mark's situation on a number of occasions and ideally we wanted him to stay,” he told Sky Sports News. “We understood that there was an interest from Arsenal but given our current goalkeeping situation there was no chance of him leaving."

Manchester City’s Shay Given was at one stage believed to be involved in a potential deal but he turned down a mooted move to Fulham which essentially scuppered Schwarzer’s chance of moving to Emirates Stadium.
