Fulham’s Hughes delighted with Schwarzer stay

Fulham manager Mark Hughes is delighted that the club was able to hold onto star goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

The Australian international was keen on a move to Fulham’s London rivals Arsenal and the Cottagers were prepared to let him go provided they found an apt replacement.

In the end, the transfer did not eventuate and Hughes was thrilled he could keep the 37-year old at his disposal.

“We talked about Mark's situation on a number of occasions and ideally we wanted him to stay. We understood that there was an interest from Arsenal but given our current goalkeeping situation there was no chance of him leaving,” he told Sky Sports.

Recent reports indicated that Arsenal made a last-ditch bid for Schwarzer on transfer deadline day but Hughes denied such claims.

"No, it didn't. There were two real strong enquiries but there was never a bid today," he added.
