Football Federation Australia to penalise divers

The A-League will undergo a crackdown on players diving for free-kicks.

Football Federation Australia is determined to stamp ‘simulation’ out of the game and will introduce new measures to penalise players who attempt to win a free-kick or have opponents sent off by diving.

Divers can now be banned through video evidence and face a two match sanction if found guilty.

‘‘The level of simulation last season was clearly unacceptable, and it’s something we needed to address,’’ said Fraser.

‘‘Nobody wants to put up with it, not ourselves, and certainly not the fans. Australians want their football tough, but most of all they want it fair.

“I think the chance of being banned for two games is a pretty strong message. If you’re prepared to take the risk, you’re probably going to miss a decent chunk of the season.’’

The A-League will be just the second competition in the world to introduce the sanctions, behind the Scottish Premier League.
