FIGC president Abete admits Italian football on it’s knees

FIGC president Giancarlo Abete accepts Italian football is on it's knees after a disastrous World Cup campaign.

Former Fiorentina boss Cesare Prandelli will be unveiled as Lippi’s successor on July 1, but Abete insists that a change of Coach won’t magically solve Italy’s problems.

“We are a little worried about the situation which is evident to everybody, also at club level,” he said.

“There is little experience at international level and this reflects on the national side too that is finding greater competitiveness and encountering more difficulties – take our struggles against Cyprus in qualifying for a start.

“If the Under-21 side is struggling to qualify for the Euros and the national team hasn’t yet won a game in 2010 then there is a problem that needs to be resolved.

“We are concerned but not pessimistic. There is a problem with the quality of the players that can be selected.

“A lot of the top clubs have foreign players and therefore the Italian ones are not experienced at international level.

“We can’t stand still now, we have to start again. That is an obligation of the entire Italian football movement.”
