Former Tottenham boss David Pleat says Chelsea have a trump card in their battle to overturn FIFA's stunning transfer ban.

Chelsea have been banned from signing players until 2011 over the manner of their deal for former Lens youngster Gael Kakuta.

In his column for the Daily Mail, Pleat wrote: "One thing about the Chelsea case puzzles me, though. For a player to play in another nation's league, there has to be a signature from the secretary of the selling club and a clearance certificate from that national association.

"There must have been a Lens signature. That could give Chelsea something to cling to at their appeal."
