Former Kansas City Wizards coach Curt Onalfo is being considered for the New York Red Bull’s sporting director role.

The 39-year old Brazilian-born Onalfo was also named as a candidate for the head coaching job but it seems as though he is more likely to take the other role as the Red Bulls won’t hire a coach until the sporting director role is filled.

The New York club experienced a tough time in 2009 and the partnership of coach Juan Carlos Osorio and ex-sporting director Jeff Agoos did not seem to work.

In this case though, current caretaker coach Richie Williams (who is the frontrunner for the coaching job) and Onalfo have a great relationship after playing together for three years at Virginia so a Williams-Onalfo partnership seems a likely scenario.
