Recently departed Adelaide United midfielder Joe Keenan is eyeing a possible return to the club after his short-term spell finished on Sunday.

The former Chelsea man was brought in as an injury replacement player for the Reds but his seven-match stint is now up and he is set to return to Victorian Premier League club South Melbourne along with Cameron Watson who appeared in all 10 matches so far but will venture back to the Oakleigh Cannons.

Keenan admitted it was a strange feeling leaving a club who is sitting on top of the A-League table but said he would look at his options in a bid to come back to Hindmarsh Stadium.

“As it stands now my contract is finished,'' Keenan told the Adelaide Advertiser.

“It's disappointing it was nice to get a game in before I go, I had a great time here and I'd like to come back so we'll see what happens.

“I've made really good friends with everyone. I bonded with players and now I'm just leaving.

“It's always hard leaving especially now we're top of the league and just walking away from that is quite strange feeling.''
