Everton skipper Neville backs Baines for England squad
Everton captain Phil Neville believes Leighton Baines can be the answer to England’s left-back question.
Following an injury to Ashley Cole and the fact Wayne Bridge has quit international football, Neville believes 25-year old Baines can provide the answer England manager Fabio Capello is looking for.
“I don’t think there is a better left-back in England at the moment than Leighton Baines,” Neville said.
“We are right behind him. He is an outstanding player and one who will probably enjoy playing international football, where there is probably a little bit of pressure on him with the situation at left-back at the moment.
“For me he has been our most outstanding player of the season so he has a real mental toughness about him.
“There is a genuine vacancy at the moment. He (Capello) has generally picked the same squad but there looks like there is an opportunity at left-back because of injury and Wayne Bridge’s retirement from international football.
“It’s opportunity knocks for someone. There is always somebody who comes late down the rails and everyone at Everton hopes it is Leighton Baines.”
