England’s Frank Lampard has praised the performances of Jermain Defoe and James Milner who came straight into the line-up to help the team to a 1-0 win over Slovenia which ensured their qualification for the Round of 16.

Tottenham striker Defoe scored the only goal of the match in his first start for the tournament whilst Villa midfielder Milner, who supplied the pass for Defoe’s goal, was solid on the right.

"Jermain Defoe and James Milner came in and they both did well,” Lampard said.

“…Jermain was sharp and in the right place and the only frustration was not getting a second goal and finishing the game more comfortably without such a nervy ending.

“There was a huge determination in the side right from the start but it was still a massive relief when Jermain Defoe's goal went in.

"He's a natural scorer who has got goals throughout his career and he's come up with the goods again.

"It's not easy to come straight in and instantly score when you haven't really been involved much in the tournament. He played a little against Algeria but not much.”
