Dutch legend Van Basten slams quality inside Chelsea team

Dutch legend Marco van Basten has slammed Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea.

Van Basten studied Chelsea’s Champions League defeat against Inter Milan and declared: “They can’t play attacking football.”

Van Basten, who won the European Cup twice with AC Milan, explained: “Chelsea are a team full of big players – big names and big physiques. I expect more from those players than just a physical battle.

“The tie against Inter was more of a wrestling match than a football game. A load of physical power, pulling and pushing in the box. It was not a joy to watch.

“I will never fault Chelsea’s efforts and the determination of their players. But they can’t play attacking football.

“The way they attack is not good enough to break down tough defences. Chelsea are a team who know how to stop goals, how to hold the ball, but creative attacking is not their strongest point.”

The former Holland national coach went on: “Chelsea have many great names and players.

“Ballack is a big boy. You didn’t see him against Inter. It’s just not good enough.

Lampard, Terry, Drogba and Anelka- all big players. In big European games, like against Inter, they must show so much more."

Ancelotti is a very conservative coach. His style, is way too slow for the EPL. The reason why the team plays better without Drogba is obvious. With Drogba as the point man, it is simple to defend against, even when most of the team is up on the offence he strays too close to the six yard zone and clatters the space. He waste too many balls in the air by heading them towards a thankfull goalie rather than do the Crouch and direct them down at a teamate for a chance at a volley or tap-in.
Without Drogba, Anelka becomes part of a team's forward movement that involves both wings and a marauding Lampard. When Anelka tries to go at it alone he ends up wasting most chances.
Well, say you why don't they play sometimes without Drogba, in a team attacking football the answer is "ask Ancelotti" he is the one collecting the millions not I.
The other problem with the star studed Chelsea team is that when they lose the ball (which is very frequent lately) they don't chase back after it the way "commoners" will do, not the Chelsea stars. And lastly Lampard is supposedly the axis of this team. How many times did he have the ball during the Inter game? .The Analysts try to show the genius of Morinho as a decision to put an attacking team against Chelsea, I don't think so. A 1-0 against a "defender" like poor Malouda (not his fault,he is a winger) is not an attacking Inter. What Morinho did is silence his old protege Lampard as if he didn't exist. Drogba and Anelka were left stranded behind enemy lines with no hope of seeing the ball, while Inter used the swift counter attack with Melito,Eto and all the midfield to create chances, yes they could have scored more.
Ancelotti should have known that this will happen and shoud have had a much more powerfull midfield to counter Inter's but unfortunately for all ,he didn't and that is why he shouldn't be at Chelsea's helm. Far too many teams have learned that by now . That 's the reason why Lampard is made to look so bad and the whole team with him. OOf that was a long one.

Well said carefree win.
I agree totally.

am a disappointed staunch chelsea supporter, the playing style of the team i religiously support isnt impressing at all.the midfield is stiff,it cannot pass,it lacks pace and generally the team lacks the cutting edge.it lacks creativity around the box.is the of system play, players or the manager to blame?cone on guys!
