Schwarzer: Middlesbrough must start collecting points
The goalkeeper has not forgotten the heartbreak of 1997 when a Boro side including the likes of Juninho, Emerson and Fabrizio Ravanelli lost League Cup and FA Cup finals and were relegated on the final day of the season.
Schwarzer said: "It would be foolish for anyone at the club to consider we've too many class players to go down. That's what everybody said 10 years ago in what was my first season at the club - and look what happened.
"No team can afford complacency, least of all us. We've given away far too many soft goals in recent matches and must put an end to that.
"Our defending just hasn't been good enough. Of course I'm part of that too, but we've been training well this week and I'm sure we can put things right.
"The belief is still there and so is the determination. Injuries haven't helped - there's no substitute for quality and experience.
When you lose players like Mido, Julio Arca, Jeremie Aliadiere and Tuncay it's never going to help.
"We've been relying on youngsters and while they've more than held their own, you need incredible depth at this level."
