Newcastle's Owen: Shearer my inspiration

The £17m man only went under the knife last weekend with German surgeon Dr Ulrike Muschaweck performing two groin operations in Munich.

Owen showed no ill-effects after the surgery on both sides of his lower abdominal region as he made a 14-minute cameo appearance against the Toffees to help grab all three points.

Owen spoke to Shearer the night before the game and then came off the bench to play a part in Emre's wonder goal before the Turk returned the compliment and fed Owen to nod home the winner.

Owen said today: "A lot of players have this operation. I was talking to Alan Shearer and he has had three of them.

"After his last one, he was back in 12 days from surgery. But he said he could have probably made it a couple of days earlier.

"I got back in eight days which is hopefully a record.

"Craig Bellamy is over there getting surgery now, so we'll see."

He added: "It is a common injury. It is wear and tear - we go out on hard pitches every day and it takes its toll.

"Most footballers end up getting one or both sides done. But I am feeling better for it now and thankfully I can go out on to the pitch and not feel any pain.

"I have been pushing myself through a lot of pain for the last month to six weeks now.

"Even before the last two internationals, and I know the manager has come out and said I did it in the internationals, I was playing in a bit of pain before that in a couple of games.

"I didn't have any option but to have it. I was playing against Derby and I felt it pretty badly and then again in the following game."
