Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has undergone a new operation this week.

The Daily Star says the Chelsea and England midfielder missed the last four months of last season after undergoing surgery to repair cruciate knee ligament damage.

But he went back under the knife on Wednesday with a new knee injury – and was ruled out of Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the USA.

Cole is not expected back in full training for four weeks and will miss the Blues’ opening Premier League fixture against Hull on August 15. A Chelsea statement said: “Joe Cole underwent minor surgery to correct a small tear in the meniscus in his knee.”

The club described it as a “minor setback” but in reality it’s a massive blow for the Cole, 27, who hasn’t played any football since January.
