Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti admits he was surprised by the World Cup struggles of Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

If his poor form continued in the Premier League it would make life for title rivals Chelsea a whole lot easier but Ancelotti wished him well.

The Chelsea manager said: "I was surprised at how he struggled. He had a fantastic season. He had an injury just before the end of the season and he was not 100 per cent fit at the start of the World Cup.

"He had the same problem as Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Lionel Messi. I hope Rooney comes back to play his best as he is a fantastic player - not only as an opponent but for people who love football like me. We like to see Rooney at 100 per cent."
