Youssouf Mulumbu has revealed that one of the first messages of congratulations he received following West Brom’s promotion came from Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka.

The midfielder was one of the club’s unsung heroes during the promotion campaign, playing a deeper role in the team’s engine room, reports the Birmingham Mail.

The 22-year-old also revealed that Anelka had played a major part in convincing him to join Albion in January 2009.

Mulumbu said: “I’m looking forward to playing against Chelsea and Anelka because he’s my friend.

“We talk regularly, usually every week, or at least every month.

“We had a laugh because I told him I was going to stop him.

“He was really happy for me and said I deserve it and I have to show what I can do in the Premier League.

“He called me straight away to congratulate me and he put on his website ‘Congratulations to Youssouf Mulumbu’.

“At first when I came to West Brom he said it would be good for me because I have the English style.

“He told me to enjoy it and show how I play.”
