Capello ponders making Liverpool ace Gerrard permanent England captain

England coach Fabio Capello is considering making Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard his permanent captain.

The Guardian says Capello is considering appointing Gerrard as the England captain on a full-time basis following the Liverpool midfielder's impressive displays this season as a stand-in for the injured Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.

The Italian, who has confirmed he will step down as national manager when his contract expires after Euro 2012 to "enjoy being a pensioner", has been impressed by the manner in which Gerrard has confronted the fallout from the summer's disappointment at the World Cup.

The 30-year-old has been outstanding in England's three games to date and has long since dispelled Capello's initial fears, fuelled in the early days of the manager's tenure, that he would be too timid to take on the role permanently.

Without the disruptive and big ego of John Terry things can only get better. Milner has already stated he wants Gerrard as his captain! Rio who?

Gerrard should always have been captain from day one. The only player we have that can boss a game, control its tempo, motivate over players by example, not a glamour boy, gives 100%, not plagued by injury, plays for his country whenever he can (unlike certain other players who always seem to be injured for internationals but then play for there club the following weekend)... the list goes on. Keep Gerrard as captain please Capello, he's the only choice you're blind if you can't see that.

capello knows very well that he needs the championship winning captain ferdinand back in the team with his armband. gerrard is not a winning captain.
