Calls for statue at Ibrox in honour of Rangers boss Smith

Rangers legend Willie Henderson wants a statue erected at Ibrox in tribute to manager Walter Smith.

Henderson was pleased when Celtic announced there is to be a statue of Jock Stein at Parkhead and said it would be fitting if Rangers recognised Smith in a similar fashion.

“It would be a great tribute to the man,” he said. “If you consider the amount of stuff he’s won, the fantastic job he did with Scotland, and then to take Rangers to the Uefa Cup final and to bring them through without a contract and to not have any money to buy players, you have to look at Walter being up there with the best Scottish managers ever.

“I don’t normally throw out accolades unless they are due, but I just think Walter Smith has been fantastic. I think it was a real stroke, bringing Walter back. After Paul Le Guen they could have brought someone in who continued down that same road. They brought Walter in and he just turned it around.”
