Bolton’s Petrov hoping to avenge horror Bulgaria debut
Bolton winger Martin Petrov is hoping to put his horror international debut for Bulgaria behind him on Friday.
Petrov and the national team take on England at Wembley Stadium in a Euro2012 qualifier and he is keen on being part of a big Bulgarian win after he was sent off just eight minutes after coming on in his debut against the Three Lions back in 1999.
"I keep thinking back to this match and it's still painful, even after so many years. But I know there's no better way to get over this than playing against England at Wembley,” he said.
"I've been to many different countries and I took part in many important matches with the national team but there's always a special feeling when you're going to play against England. It's the country where I'm playing at the moment after all.”
Petrov admitted that England at Wembley provided a daunting task for the Bulgarians but felt his side were entering the match with a lot less pressure than their expectant opponents.
“England are the favourites but their anxiety could be important for us. They are under pressure after the World Cup and we will have to give them problems,” he added.
"England at Wembley will be very difficult for Bulgaria. The key for us will be to stop them from keeping the ball in midfield and getting their rhythm together in attack.
"We've had many changes in the team, the squad and the set-up. But now I am optimistic for our future and the success in this Group.
"It's our dream to play in the Euros. But the Group is hard. I still believe we are fighting for second place because England have a big squad. We must be resolute, strong in defence and be inspired by Wembley."
