Owen Coyle made a number of changes to his Carling Cup team to take on Southampton from his side that beat West Ham United 3-1 in the league on the weekend.

The Trotters got the job done 1-0 at St Mary’s in front of 10,000 fans and although it looks like a second-rate effort against a League One side, Coyle was happy with the way his team went about their job.

“We made nine changes from Saturday and that was for two reasons," said Coyle.

"One to get a bit of freshness and also to give these lads some game time under their belts because they will all be called upon in the Premier League.

"It was a hard-fought game and tremendous credit to Southampton. They were terrific on the night but we are delighted to get the victory."
