Birmingham to offer Barton lifeline

Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish will take a chance on Newcastle bad-boy Joey Barton - but only on an initial season-long loan with a view to a permanent transfer, reports The Guardian.

The Blues could offer a mutually satisfactory escape route but the midfielder's wages of around £65,000 a week could represent a stumbling block as Newcastle would prefer an outright sale.
