Birmingham’s Ferguson: Rangers captain Weir pure winner

Birmingham City midfielder Barry Ferguson has hailed the impact at Rangers made by current captain David Weir.

Weir will lead Gers at Hampden tomorrow in the Scottish League Cup final against St Mirren.

Ex-Gers skipper Ferguson told The Herald: “You talk to anyone about big Davie, and the first thing they say is ‘top man, lovely guy'.

“That, of course, is absolutely true. But on the pitch he’s a different beast. I have seldom seen such a winner in my career so far.

"Davie is absolutely driven by winning. I think that’s what has kept him going for the last few years at Rangers, as he’s been chasing prizes and silverware. He sets huge standards for the team; I have been chewed out a few times during games if I wasn’t doing what he expected.

“It may looks as though he’s a quiet captain. But he is not slow in letting others know if they are hiding, or not giving it everything.

"There is definitely a side to Davie Weir that people might be surprised at. I don’t think you can operate at the top level the way he has, for so long, without a real drive and determination. He hates losing. He will be as motivated for the final as anyone tomorrow. The man is just a winner.”
