West Bromwich Albion’s Giles Barnes is glad to be involved in the summer fitness slog following three years of injury trauma, reports the Birmingham Mail.

The 21 year old has struggled with major knee, foot and, most recently, Achilles injuries since helping Derby to reach the Premier League in 2007. But the Barking-born player is actually enjoying the daily grind of intensive fitness work over at Albion’s training HQ in Mierlo.

“It’s good to be out here, good to be on tour,” said Barnes.

“I’m no longer catching up but on a par with everyone else.

“Just to be able to do a 1,000-metre run is good.

“I’ve not had that feeling for a while – just to be able to do everything. It might sound weird but I’ve missed that feeling of not having to play catch-up.”
