Aston Villa launch £18M bid for Middlesbrough pair

Aston Villa are on the brink of a mega bucks deal for Middlesbrough pair Tuncay Sanli and Stewart Downing.

The Sun says Boro boss Gareth Southgate has given the green light to Aston Villa's £18million double swoop for Downing and Tuncay.

But Middlesbrough boss Southgate will not entertain any attempt by Villa to get £8m-rated defender David Wheater, 22, too.

England winger Downing and Turkish striker Tuncay, 27, must be sold to help balance the books after Boro's relegation.

Downing, 24, will miss the start of the season as he is recovering from a foot op.

Southgate said: "It depends whether clubs want to take him now. In January, there might be four or five clubs involved but we'll concentrate on getting him fit.

"Tuncay's the captain of his country and I don't think we can hold on to him.

"But David's not for sale. He's a leader and we have to build around him."
