Zubizarreta wasn't behind Martino Barcelona appointment

Barcelona sports director Andoni Zubizarreta wasn't behind the appointment of Gerardo Martino as new coach, it has been revealed.

The 50-year-old former Paraguay boss succeeds Tito Vilanova, who stepped down from the role on Friday after one season in charge as he continues his battle with cancer.

But his appointment wasn't 100 per cent backed inside Barca, where president Sandro Rosell and vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu both supported the Argentine, while Zubi pushed for the return of Luis Enrique, who only just signed with Celta Vigo, says El Mundo Deportivo.

In the end, the stand-off was decided by Rosell as president and the board went with Tata Martino.
