The war of words between Lazio striker Mauro Zarate and Roma captain Francesco Totti has continued.

Zarate called Totti "finished as a player," while the Roma captain hit back with a sarcastic New Year's message.

"What does he want? He only talks about me to ingratiate himself with the Roma fans," Zarate was quoted as saying in the Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Maybe he doesn't know that in my first Serie A season I scored 16 goals, that I won the title in Argentina aged 17 and the Under-20 World Cup."
