In the first pick of the 2009 MLS Super Draft, Seattle Sounders picked University of Akron forward Steve Zakuani. The 20 year old "Generation Adidas" forward will not count against Sounders FC's salary cap.
As with many young Super Draft players, Zakuani was not 100 per cent aware of where he would land until the last moments.
"I heard a few things a couple of weeks ago, but up from the last second I had no idea," he told ESPN. "I'm ready. I want to go in there. I know coach Sigi Schmid is a great coach and I want to come in and contribute right away."
Seattle is coached by former UCLA and Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid. who led the Columbus Crew to the MLS title last season.
"I would have gone with a defender, but Sigi's a lot smarter than I am," former Galaxy player and general manager Alexi Lalas said.
