Zakuani back in touch in first Seattle Sounders start for 500 days

Steve Zakuani made his first Seattle Sounders start since April 23 2011 on the weekend.

The 24-year old winger suffered a badly broken leg against Colorado Rapids and it has taken him 500 days to be reinstated into the Sounders starting line-up.

Zakuani, who lasted 66 minutes, registered an assist in his sides 1-1 draw at FC Dallas and was thrilled to contribute to the cause after such a long absence.

"I was just happy we scored," Zakuani said.

"It didn't hit me until halftime that it was my first start. It was good to get back on the board in terms of an assist, but I was honestly just disappointed that we didn't get to the half at 1-0."

And Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid was again pleased to see the pure ability and speed of the former Arsenal youth.

"Steve shows that he still has that explosion, the ability to beat people," Schmid said.

"As he gains confidence, hopefully those kind of opportunities will occur more often in the game. He's shown that he can still do it. It was a tremendous assist. Now it's just a matter of gaining game fitness and the ability to do that on a repetitive level."
