Young Villa keeper wins U17 World Cup with Switzerland

Aston Villa youngster Benjamin Siegrist not only won the FIFA Under-17 World Cup with Switzerland but scooped the tournament's Golden Gloves award. The 17-year-old was delighted to be named the best goalkeeper after his country overcame Brazil, Mexico, Germany and Italy before beating hosts Nigeria 1-0 in the final, reports the Birmingham Mail.

"It is just a terrific feeling to win the World Cup,'' said Siegrist, who joined Villa early this year from FC Basel. "I am so happy. It was an amazing experience.

"To win the World Cup is the best thing I can possibly achieve at this level so I am thrilled.

"I was nervous before the final because it was in front of 60,000 fans in a hostile environment. But once I had managed to get a couple of touches and made a few saves everything was fine.

"It was our first time in the World Cup finals at under-17 level so to win it was an absolutely incredible achievement."

Siegrist dedicated his Golden Gloves award to his team-mates.

"I am very proud," he added. "It is an honour to win it, but I don't deserve all the credit. The defenders were absolutely magnificent. They gave everything in every game."
