Playing alongside the explosive Barton was one of the big attractions for Young as he prepared to leave Aston Villa.
"Joey is probably as close to the all-round midfielder as you can get," claimed Young.
"He has grown up a lot. He's 29 now and he knows the mistakes he has made are in the past. Hopefully he has learned from them and he'll be looking to have a really strong season because he's still got international ambitions.
"We've done really well to get hold of him. He's got a bit of everything. He creates a lot of goals and that's one thing we're going to need in this league."
