'You can recognise Govan, it has a halo above it!' - Man Utd great Sir Alex Ferguson

Football's most successful club manager Sir Alex Ferguson has heaped praise on the district of Glasgow that he grew up in.

The former Manchester United boss paid tribute to Govan, southwest Glasgow, when speaking at the Clyde Auditorium as part of his book tour.

During his one-and-a-half hour Q&A session, Fergie touched on his love for the area where he grew up quickly, praising it for making him the man he is today.

"You can recognise Govan, it's got a halo above it," he said nostalgically.

"Most people of my generation who grew up in a working-class background would say the same.

"That we trusted in each other and it made me the character I am today.

"Growing up on Clydeside in particular gives you the determination to do well and I remember doing an interview when I went back many years ago.

"The young lad asked, 'Mr Ferguson, can you tell me what shaped your character?' And, honestly the wind was blowing down that Clyde and it was freezing, so I said, 'Can you feel that wind? That's what shaped me.

"For people brought up in that environment there is a resolve to do well and that stays with you."
