Xabi Alonso believes Liverpool may have the edge over Manchester United heading into Monday night's north-west derby.

The Bayern Munich midfielder told LiverpoolFC.com that his former club are taking better form into the Anfield clash and should come out on top on Merseyside.

However, Alonso is well aware that the derby between the arch rivals always throws up interesting results which can never be predicted.

"These kinds of games, anyone can win," he said.

"Maybe Liverpool are in a better position and maybe favourites, but it doesn't matter.

"United still have great players and a good team. This game is so important for them because they don't want the gap to be bigger."
