Wrighty: Man Utd starlet Rashford can be England's next Rooney or Owen

Ian Wright believes Marcus Rashford has the ability to light up the England team at Euro2016.

The Arsenal legend expects the 18-year-old Manchester United striker to be included in Roy Hodgson's final 23-man squad on Tuesday and has backed him to have a similar impact to that of Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen who were also at the forefront of the national team so early in their careers.

"Some people say it would be the biggest gamble of Roy Hodgson's reign. I say it would be the most exciting," Wright wrote in his column for The Sun.

"When Roy trims two players from his Euro squad today, I'm sure the name Marcus Rashford will have led to more head scratching than any other.

"This is an 18-year-old who, just over three months ago, hadn't even worn a first-team shirt for Manchester United

"But he is now a household name who could head to France as England's most thrilling young prospect since Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney announced themselves.

"I specifically use those examples because there are comparisons.

"In 1998, Owen went to the World Cup as an 18-year-old and capped his first tournament with THAT goal against Argentina.

"In 2004, Rooney was the same age, but the Three Lions' major player at the Euros, with four goals in four games, until he was injured in the quarter-final defeat to Portugal.

"I know both were a more established at their clubs but the point is there.

"Namely, the two real edge-of-the-seat, genuinely exciting moments for England fans have come after giving youth a chance.

"And I genuinely believe that if Rashford gets the nod for France, we could easily be heading for another."
