Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho asked to be suspended after his failed drugs test last season, it has been revealed.
Sakho has since been cleared of doping by UEFA, with the ban meaning he missed the final of the Europa League and also Euros selection with France.
Many believe Sakho was treated unfairly, but Marc Vouillamoz, UEFA's chief medical officer, admits Sakho could've avoided the suspension.
He told L'Equipe: "Certain substances result in automatic suspension, others not.
"And in this case, the player wished to be suspended temporarily, of his own will, and UEFA has accepted his request."
Sakho's initial suspension concluded on May 28.
