Football fans are being urged to dig deep at tonight's Socceroos versus Costa Rica match to show their support for people living in areas devastated by Typhoon Haiyan.
World Vision will be collecting donations at the international friendly match at Allianz Stadium in Sydney tonight, thanks to the support of Football Federation Australia (FFA). Volunteers will be asking football fans for gold coin donations at entrance gates.
With an estimated 13 million people affected by Typhoon Haiyan and three million displaced1, Socceroo supporters will help World Vision provide immediate basic supplies to those in need as well as long term assistance with rebuilding livelihoods.
World Vision Australia chief executive Tm Costello said the organisation hopes to help 400,000 people during the emergency response. The organisation has distributed urgent supplies of food and water to communities in need.
"The devastation in the Philippines is massive. Most people have seen images of how bad it is in Tacloban but there are many more places that need urgent help." said Mr Costello.
"With tonight's collection Socceroo fans will play a part in helping those who are struggling to access life's basics," Mr Costello added.
FFA Chief Executive Officer David Gallop said he was pleased to work with World Vision to help the people of the Philippines in this hour of need.
"Football is a truly global game and we are happy to work with World Vision to help the enormous amount of people affected by such a terrible tragedy," Mr Gallop said.
"Football fans represent the diverse backgrounds from around the world so it is appropriate that we help World Vision."
World Vision has been working in the Philippines for nearly 60 years and is well placed to deliver aid to those in need.
