World players union Fifpro critical of current transfer system

The current transfer system is "failing football and its players", according to world players' union Fifpro, reports BBC Sport. Talks aimed at reforming the system have collapsed with representatives of clubs, players and leagues across Europe failing to agree on key issues.

"Basic measures must be introduced to give players stability in their contractual relations with clubs," said secretary general Theo van Seggelen.

Fifpro has now called an extraordinary meeting of its 29-member European division in Greece on 28-29 January to "address this serious matter".

"The transfer system is failing football and its players, and highlights the need for further reform," Van Seggelen added.

"Fifpro is increasingly concerned by the gap between rich and poor in the football industry, and how the game continues to face economic problems despite record revenues."

"Every year, around 4,000 players file cases with Fifa either because their club has not paid them or the club has unjustly terminated the contract," Van Seggelen said.

"Due to the volume of cases, players have to wait several years for a hearing which, in over 90% of matters, is decided in favour of the player.

"Given the short-term and precarious nature of a player's career, these delays cannot be tolerated."
