World Cup qualifying: Slovenia overcome Russia on away goals

Slovenia have surprised Russia by qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup on the away goals rule after recording a 1-0 home victory.

The first leg on the weekend ended 2-1 to Russia meaning Slovenia took a slight advantage into the return leg in Maribor despite being a goal to the negative.

That advantage was capitalised on just a minute before half-time when Bochum striker Zlatko Dedic toed in a Valter Birsa cross to make it 1-0 on the night and 2-2 overall.

That scoreline was to Slovenia’s advantage on the away goal rule – their goal in Russia on the weekend proving to be the decisive factor in the play-off series.

Russia coach Guus Hiddink was unable to work his magic like he has in the past with South Korea and Australia and the fact two Russian players, Alexander Kerzhakov and Yuri Zhirkov, were sent off in the second half did not make things easier.

Slovenia put the disappointment of missing out on Germany 2006 behind them and will now compete in the 2010 finals in South Africa after a spirited victory in front of home fans.
