WORLD CUP - Group B: Spain end World Cup on high with easy win over Australia

Spain have managed to record at least a victory to finish the 2014 FIFA World Cup on a high with a 3-0 victory over Australia in Curitiba.

Goals from David Villa, Fernando Torres and Juan Mata did the damage for the 2010 champions who bow out of this year's competition with just three points after earlier defeats to Holland and Chile.

Australia were well below the form they showed in their losses to Chile and the Dutch but they can hold their heads high after playing some exciting football during the tournament.

After looking likely to score during the first half, Villa took his international goal tally 59 when he converted with a deft finish in the 36th minute.

La Roja's all-time leading scorer produced a clever flick with his right foot behind his body to slot Juanfran's pass beyond Mat Ryan, giving the World Cup holders a deserved lead.

Spain doubled their advantage in the second half when Fernando Torres notched his first World Cup goal since 2006, courtesy of a brilliant pass Andres Iniesta, which allowed the Chelsea man to simply side foot past Ryan.

A third goal was imminent for the Spaniards and it came with eight minutes remaining when substitute Mata, who had replaced Villa, slid the ball through the legs of Ryan after a chipped through ball from Fabregas.

Vicente del Bosque's side thoroughly deserved their three-goal triumph which will give Spain some sort of confidence leading into European Championship qualifiers later this year while Ange Postecoglou's Socceroos drop out of the World Cup with zero points and a goal difference of minus six.
