Debutant Andros Townsend set up England's opener for Wayne Rooney before the Three Lions enjoyed a moment of good fortune as Branko Boskovic turned the ball into his own net.
Dejan Damjanovic got Montenegro back into the game but Townsend's long-range shot restored the two goal advantage and Daniel Sturridge's late penalty added gloss to a decent performance from the home side.
