WORLD CUP 2018: Portugal advance after controversial Iran draw

Portugal drew 1-1 with Iran on Monday in a match marred by VAR controversy.

Ricardo Quaresma scored one of the goals of the tournament on the stroke of halftime to put Portugal ahead.

The Besiktas winger, starting his first game in Russia, played a one-two with Adrien Silva out of the right wing before releasing an audacious trivela strike into the top corner.

Cristiano Ronaldo had the opportunity to double Portugal's advantage but had his penalty saved by Iran goalkeeper Ali Beiranvand.

The Real Madrid star was then fortunate not to be sent off after his flailing elbow caught Morteza Pouraliganji.

Referee Enrique Caceres consulted with VAR for a lengthy amount of time before showing Ronaldo a yellow card.

But undoubtedly the most controversial VAR call of the night, and arguably the tournament, helped Iran level the scores.

Iran played a deep cross which was met by Sardar Azmoun, his header then hit the outstretched arm of Cedric Soares, who was two yards away.

The referee reversed his original decision and awarded a handball to the Iranians. Karim Ansarifard slotted cooly past Rui Patricio.

That wasn't the end of the drama as Iran had a chance to win it four minutes into stoppage time, but Mehdi Taremi hit the side netting from inside the penalty box.

With Spain holding Morocco to a 2-2 draw, Fernando Santos' side have finished second in Group B. They will now play Uruguay in the last-16.
