World Cup 2018: Elated Iran steal last gasp win over Morocco

Iran have stolen a dramatic 1-0 victory over Morocco in Saint Petersburg, claiming three points with a final minute own goal off the head of Aziz Bouhaddouz.

The match was intriguing from kickoff, as it pitted a very difficult Iran defence which were very rarely beaten in qualifying against a Morocco team who had flair and attacking intent on their side.

The first big chance fell to Morocco through potential breakout star Ziyech in an acre of space off a corner, but he couldn't keep his cool and completely missed the ball.

Morocco were well and truly on top in the first half, registering eight shots to two and maintaining 70 percent of possession inside the first half hour of play.

Azmoun had Iran's best chance of the first half, failing to score from a one on one opportunity spawned from a quick counter attack. Given Morocco's dominance to that point, it was a huge letdown for his side.

Iran fought back to give themselves a good shot at victory, and looked much the better side after the first half hour, but the score remained 0-0 at half time.

Morocco started quickly again as play restarted, but Iran regained control of the match through forceful means, racking up a yellow card just two minutes into the half.

Morocco were dealt a blow as Nordin Amrabat suffered a head knock and looked very groggy, forcing a substitution.

Ziyech had Morocco's best chance of the half at the 79 minute mark with an expertly executed volley, but his effort was saved and the scoresheet remained unharmed.

Iran suffered a what looked to be a devastating final blow, as Alizera Jahanbakhsh was stretchered off with just five minutes to play to seemingly sum up a fairly difficult day.

In World Cup football though, you can't count any side out until the final whistle has blown. After Iran played a late ball into the box, it was Morocco's Aziz Bouhaddouz who dived to win a header that would end up in his own net.

There are few more heartbreaking ways to lose a World Cup match than a last gasp own goal, and Morocco have a fight on their hands to stay alive in this tournament. To go through to the next round, they will likely need to pick up points from both Spain and Euro 2016 winners Portugal.

Iran will now go into their next clash against Spain full of confidence, having put themselves in the best position possible to advance to the knockout rounds for the first time in their history.
