WORLD CUP 2018: Coutinho belter not enough as Brazil held by Switzerland

Brazil have drawn 1-1 with Switzerland in their opening Group E fixture at the 2018 World Cup.

Philippe Coutinho's 20th wonder-strike was cancelled out by Steven Zuber's powerful second-half header, seeing both teams leave Rostov-on-Don with a point each.

Tite's Selecao side looked comfortable from the start, but despite their dominance in possession, there were no clear cut chances in the opening stages.

And they weren't needed thanks to Philippe Coutinho's imagination.

Picking the ball up from a headed Swiss clearance, the Barcelona star took one touch to get the ball out of his feet before directing his curled shot into the far top corner. It was the type of goal we saw time and time again during Coutinho's spell with Liverpool.

Brazil became relaxed after the opener and were punished for their attitude shortly after the break when Zuber scored the equaliser.

The Hoffenheim man netted one of the simplest goals you'll see in Russia when he connected on Xherdan Shaqiri's in-swinging free-kick. However, he may have been lucky that the referee decided against using VAR as he appeared to push Miranda to give himself space for the header.

Brazil's best chances for a winner fell right at the death. Roberto Firmino's failure to direct his free header past Roman Burkl was only bettered by Miranda's sitter shortly after.
