WORLD CUP 2018: Brilliant Cavani double steers Uruguay past Portugal

Edinson Cavani's helped Uruguay defeat Portugal 2-1 in the World Cup last-16 stage in Sochi on Saturday night.

Pepe cancelled Uruguay's opening goal but Cavani popped up shortly after to score the winner for Oscar Tavarez's side.

Defeat for Portugal meant Cristiano Ronaldo exited from the World Cup shortly after Lionel Messi's Argentina were knocked out by France.

Cavani's first goal with just seven minutes on the clock was a thing of beauty, and could possibly be the longest one-two goal in football history.

The PSG striker knocked a cross-field pass to Luis Suarez, who then waited patiently for Cavani to make a late run. Cavani then done brilliantly to cushion Suarez's heavy pass beyond Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

La Celeste hadn't conceded in nine hours of football before Pepe equalised for Portugal. The Besiktas defender nodded home from close range, with his team then going on to dominate the play.

That was until Cavani steered a superb shot past Patricio eight minutes later to book Uruguay's spot in the quarterfinals.

They will now face France in Nizhny Novgorod on Friday.
