WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: Penalties again prove England’s downfall

England took a second half lead only for France to level late-on, then, after extra time failed to separate the teams, captain Faye White missed the decisive spot kick to send the French team through to the semi-final’s 4-3 on penalties.

France deserved their victory as they dominated for long periods but credit to England for a battling performance but as their male counterparts keep finding it was not enough for them to progress in the competition.

Jill Scott put England ahead against the run of play just before the hour mark and just when it seemed they had weathered the French onslaught, Elise Bussaglia equalized in the 88th minute via the woodwork before 26,395 fans.

England have still to make a semi-final appearance, and have gone 37 years since last defeating the French.

All of which has left England coach Hope Powell considering her position.

The 44 year old, who has been in the manager's job for 13 years, said it might be time for her to take a developmental role.

"Within the FA we are looking at something, hopefully that will come to fruition," she said.

"The most important thing is I want to be involved in women's football, preferably in England."
