WOMEN'S WORLD CUP: England held by Mexico in opening group game

England's World Cup campaign began with a low key 1-1 draw in Group B with Mexico. England deservedly took the lead after 21 minutes with a Fara Williams header, but by the interval Mexico had drawn level against the run of play - a long range effort from Monica Ocampo restoring parity.

The South American's took heart from this leveller and just about shaded the second half even if Eniola Aluko did miss two clear cut chances for England.

The crowd of over 18,000 were fully behind Mexico who looked happy with their point at full time.

England coach Hope Powell was disappointed with the result: "No excuses, we have played better and we will have to play better if we want to stay in this tournament.

"The goal flew in, didn't it, but to concede the way we did was bitterly disappointing. We would have expected Karen (Bardsley, England's goalkeeper) to have saved that.

"We dominated up until that point and she was devastated to have let that goal in. It let them back into the game but at least we did not lose."
