WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2nd Leg: Man City Women advance to last four

Manchester City Women booked their place in the semi-final's of the Champions League with a 1-0 victory on the night, 2-0 on aggregate, and will now meet holders Lyon in the last four.

Five minutes before the break and City finally settled the nerves that goes with a narrow one goal advantage from the first leg. In Denmark City had been limited to the one goal and the concern was they might rue the missed chances their dominance had created.

Certainly they had chances to score before finally taking the lead but then visitor's Fortuna also had two gilt edged opportunities to level on the night and on aggregate before Mel Lawley's corner just on half-time.

As the corner came over Lucy Bronze rose highest to loop a header over keeper Maria Christensen to the delight of the 2,251 crowd.

City have not lost at home over 90 minutes since a 1-0 league defeat by

Arsenal on 19 April 2015 and much of their success has been based on a sound defence which looked unusually nervy for the opening 25 minutes.

The Danes should have took advantage of this slackness twice in quick succession midway through the half. First Camilla Larsen shot straight at Karen Bardsley from close range and Caroline Rask had two chances to score. First here initial shot was saved but from the rebound, and with the goal open, she blasted wide.

Jill Scott and marquee signing Carri Lloyd both could have scored in the first 15 minutes and their failure to do so gave Fortuna a sense of an upset which the Danes failed to grasp.

City's performance in the second half was professional in seeing the game out. Keeping possession when necessary but not over committing either. Fortuna for their part looked a beaten side and they rarely posed a threat to a City rearguard which had tightened up markedly.

There were very few scoring opportunities for either side in the second half which suited the hosts and Fortuna did not seem to have the character to increase the tempo and push for two strikes which would have taken them through on away goals.

The final whistle came with City in the ascendancy and Fortuna looking at damage limitation. Holders Lyon now await City in the semi-finals who will most certainly pose more problems than the Danes.

Man City: 1 (Bronze 40)

Fortuna Hjørring: 0

City are through to the semi-finals 2-0 on aggregate
