Sunderland have pulled out of talks for free agent Max Clayton.
The Evening Chronicle says the Black Cats had been in talks with Crewe chairman John Bowler and finance operations manager Andy Blakemore over a compensation payment for the 19-year-old.
But reports in the Midlands suggest that those talks have stalled, and the 19-year-old has now joined Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers on trial.
