Sunderland striker Stephen Elliott is close to earning a move to Wolves.

The 23-year-old Republic of Ireland international is on the verge of signing a three-year deal with Wanderers and has flown to his homeland to join his prospective team-mates on their pre-season tour.

Molineux manager Mick McCarthy said: "I signed him as a youngster at Sunderland so I know a lot about him and what he is capable of.

"He's a good footballer, he's always a threat up front and he gets goals.

"I want competition for places all over the park and we've really got it now up front."
