Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that the club have received a formal apology from Wigan Athletic regarding a spitting incident on the weekend.

Latics captain Antolin Alcaraz has been banned for three matches for spitting on Wolves defender Richard Stearman during Sunday’s clash at the Molineux and even though he has yet to apologise, McCarthy said that Wigan boss Roberto Martinez had on behalf of the club.

“I spoke to Roberto and he apologised on behalf of Wigan,” said McCarthy.

“I don’t think spitting is indicative of Wigan, Roberto or Dave Whelan, the Wigan chairman. They’re lovely people and it’s a lovely club.”
