Mick McCarthy has challenged his Wolves players to find that extra effort needed to win on the biggest stages in the Premier League. Wednesday's narrow 1-0 Carling Cup defeat against Manchester United convinced him even more that the potential is there but he has called on his side to come up with that little bit extra to turn promising displays into wins.
He said: "As a club we have fantastic potential. But we have to stay in the Premier League to realise that potential.
"It would be interesting to talk about it next year if we are still in the Premier League, which I think we will be.
"Against United I just don't think we had that extra little 10% whatever it might be, devilment, belief, arrogance, cheekiness, twinkle in the eye, whatever it might be to win that game.
"Everyone said to me 'you did okay' and, yes, we did all right. But all right and okay don't win you games at Old Trafford.
"Playing well and having fantastic performances wins you games at Old Trafford.
"What we need to do is make sure that we stay in this league until next season.
"Then if we go there next season, the players will have developed even more."
