Wolves boss McCarthy set to wheel and deal during the summer

Mick McCarthy is envisaging a busy summer at Molineux with more new signings set to come through the 'in' door and fringe players expected to move on, reports the Birmingham Mail. The Wolves boss has already brought in Jelle Van Damme and Steven Fletcher to the tune of £10 million - but Portsmouth's South African midfielder Aaron Mokeona is not a target.

"There is a bit of business still to be done," said McCarthy. "And there will have to be a few move on as well.

"Chris Iwelumo has gone. He was terrific. 'Lumes' was one of the building blocks in the club's progress.

"You get sad but you have to move on. Players do become surplus to requirements.

"As a bloke I'd still want him around, but with regards to players they want to play football.

"Andy Keogh started the season and then got injured and wasn't in the team. He does not want to be third or fourth choice, none of them do, but that's how it can end up.

"Andrew Surman is a good player, he had a couple of games then didn't get his chance. He doesn't want to be third or fourth choice. If that's going to be the case they might want to move on.

"There are players who have helped us but it comes to a natural progression that they will move on - you can't just keep them here for back-up. They have got to be seen to be fighting for a place.

"If they come back and are seen to be fighting for a place then I guess that (them leaving) won't happen. If it turns out that some players aren't fighting for a place then it does happen. It's natural progression.

"I know what will happen. They will all come back but I can only have a squad of 25. There's lads who haven't played as much as they would like but they all come back with renewed enthusiasm wanting to play - it's a good club and they all enjoy it here.

"But if it looks like they aren't going to play, it will be 'heh gaffer, do you see me fitting in here?'

"The players I mentioned (Keogh and Surman) might be the best ones in training and come back as fit as fleas.

"I want them all to come back and fight for a spot. I am all for 25 players kicking, scrapping and biting to get into the team."
